NYSDOH Releases New Tobacco Use Brief

The New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Tobacco Control, released a new brief with information on adult tobacco use in New York State. Data comes from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

Key Findings:

  • The adult smoking rate in NYS is 14.1%
  • Adult smoking has dropped 22% between 2011 and 2017, but has remained relatively unchanged since 2014
  • Smoking rates are highest among adult who report frequent mental distress, those enrolled in Medicaid, those who are unemployed, those living with disability, those with less than a high school education, and those with an annual household income less than $25,000
