New York State has now joined a handful of other states in raising the age to purchase both tobacco products and electronic cigarettes to twenty-one. Governor Cuomo signed the bill on on 7/16, and it will take effect 120 days after being signed.
The average age of a new smoker in NY is 13, and this new law can help keep tobacco products out of the hands of our youth. This law will also apply to e-cigarettes, and important point because youth e-cigarette use in New York has gone up 160% between 2014 and 2018.
