Tobacco Action Coalition of the Finger Lakes
Tobacco Free Grocery Stores
Reducing the number of stores that sell tobacco makes prevention and cessation efforts more effective by decreasing social acceptability and changing the norm. TACFL is working with pharmacies and grocery stores to stop selling tobacco products.
Grocery stores have been increasingly assuming community leadership in promoting community health and well-being. Some examples include:
- Supermarket Health & Wellness Centers with store-based nutritionists & dietitians.
- Scoring systems that help consumers choose healthier foods.
- Extensive selections of natural and organic foods.
- Support for community events, youth groups and health-promoting charities.
Tobacco products have no place at our local markets as it is the only legal product that, when used as directed, does harm. As grocers become more health conscience it is important that they remember the harm that tobacco does.
